mullet hairstyle men

Nowadays we see that the mullet haircut is making a comeback. Generally speaking, a mullet haircut means that the hair on the back is longer than usual. This was popular in the 1970s, 1980s and parts of the 1990s, but the actual mullet haircut is centuries old.

Some people love the mullet and other people hate it. The classic mullet I would not really recommend, but there are many modern versions nowadays. And these modern mullets are getting more popular, so it is time to write a dedicated blog post about it. Even the owner of Blumaan had a mullet not so long ago.

1. Blown out mullet

The first modern mullet haircut I want to talk about is the blown-out mullet. One of the best examples of a celebrity that had this blown out mullet is Joe Keery, the actor that plays Steve in Stranger Things. You will need medium long hair to achieve this kind of mullet. Use a blow-dryer to style it, because that makes it easier to style it to the back.

When you want to achieve a lot of volume, I would use a skeleton, quiff, or vented brush together with your blow-dryer to create this hairstyle. It also helps to detangle thicker hair types, so that your blown out mullet stays voluminous.

This mullet is basically a slick-back, but with longer hair on the back. It all smooths over in each other and there are no hard lines. This voluminous mullet can be styled using a sea salt spray as a pre-styler. Afterwards you can use a medium hold hair clay with little to no shine to keep your mullet hairstyle into place.

2. Afro mullet

An afro mullet works very well for men with ringlets. Kanye West and Usher both has a afro mullet in the past. It is best to keep your hair short for this hairstyle. If desired, you can keep the sides even shorter or create a fade. On the top and on the back, it is about the same length for an afro mullet.

Another benefit of the afro mullet is that it is very low maintenance. It requires not a lot of styling, because it will hold its shape on its own. I would recommend using a little bit of hair cream to add some shine. That way your mullet hair will not look dry, and it adds some definition.

3. Wavy mullet

The wavy mullet has similarities with the blown-out mullet I mentioned above, but the hair has more waves. Wavy hair works very well for mullet haircuts because this hairstyle can be worn very relaxed and tousled. Your hair is allowed to be a little messy and you can just follow the natural waves of your hair for this wavy mullet.

The wavy mullet is a very smooth one. The hair on the top flows over into the hair on the back. There are not clear parts between the hair on the top and in the back. This mullet will benefit from some volume, so use a sea salt spray or pre-styling spray and a blow-dryer.

Afterwards you can keep this wavy mullet as is, but you can also apply a little bit of medium hold clay with a matte finish. It will add some more hold and increased styling options. A natural, semi-matte finish works very well for a mullet haircut with wavy hair.

4. Pompadour mullet

The first three mullet haircuts I mentioned were more modern versions, but a Pompadour mullet is an interesting hairstyle as well. It is a bit more classic, but not old or out of style.

With a regular Pompadour hairstyle, you style your hair up. Usually, the sides and the back are shorter, but when you are going for a mullet, then you need to leave the back longer, of course. You can keep the sides shorter or go for a fade.

A pompadour mullet looks best when it has some shine to it. Just like a regular pompadour, I would recommend choosing a pomade to keep this mullet into shape. You can either pick an oil based one or a water-based pomade. It all depends on your preferences.

It will prove useful to use a comb or brush, so that you can comb or brush this pompadour mullet in your desired style. Pompadour hairstyles are groomed looks.

5. Curly mullet

A curly mullet looks like a wavy mullet, but curly hair or a perm is necessary for this look. A curly mullet is slightly more classic, but it gets more popular nowadays.

This hairstyle is great to get when you want to do something different with your curls. In most cases I would advise to embrace your curly hair and pick an interesting look for yourself, like this curly mullet.

A curly mullet is great to keep a bit messy and tousled. Some volume would be nice, so you could use a blow-dryer for that with some sea salt spray. For styling I would choose a light hair cream to add some more shine and definition.

I would not recommend applying a wax, clay or paste for a curly mullet, because it can weigh your hair down and make it seem a bit flat, which would be a shame.

Conclusion

A mullet haircut or hairstyle is starting to become more popular. Not necessarily that classic version that makes you look like a 1980s musician, but the modern mullets we will see more often. A few years ago, we branded the mullet one of the worst hairstyles, but that was primarily that classic one.

In this blog post I talked about five different mullet haircuts. There are way more mullet haircuts, like a French crop version or faux hawk option, but I picked the five above for diversity. You can see that a mullet hairstyle works for all hair types: straight, wavy, curly, or afro. In the end a mullet is nothing more than longer hair on the back. Usually, it is styled a bit too the front or it has a curl on the bottom.
