Beard without mustache: what are your options?
Beards are still pretty popular. They might not be as popular anymore as a few years ago when many (American) athletes had large beards, but a good beard will never go out of style.
And there are many different options when choosing a beard, of course. Most beards are usually combined with a mustache, but you also have beards that have no mustache at all. This blog post is about options for a beard without mustache.
You can also choose to just grow a mustache and have no beard. When you are curious about different mustache styles, then you can read this blog post.
Why a beard without mustache?
Some men just do not like a mustache. It is directly under your nose, so when it gets a bit longer, it can start to tickle or every time you drink something, it gets wet. Those are a few reasons why some men prefer a beard without mustache.
A very short mustache and a longer beard, that just does not look that great usually. It is better to go for a beard without a mustache in that case. And there are plenty of options to choose from.
No mustache beard styles
There are more beard no mustache styles than you initially might think. Not all of them are maybe the most trendy or modern, but there is a lot of variation. Below I will show and talk about a few beards without mustaches.
The goatee
Perhaps one of the best-known versions of beards without mustaches, is the goatee. When you have a goatee, you only have hair on your chin. Perhaps you also have some hair directly under your underlip, the so-called soul patch. When you have both, you call it a goat patch.
Originally a goatee really meant just some hair on your chin, but nowadays we also call it a goatee when you have a mustache or when you wear other kind of bears. Many famous actors usually combine a goatee with a ring beard or other type of beard.
A goatee is a pretty decent choice when you like a beard without mustache. It might not be for everyone, because it certainly draws some attention when you have a goatee on a younger age, but perhaps you do not mind that at all.
Chin curtain
The next example of a beard without mustache is the chin curtain. Your sideburns are longer and are connected to hair on your cheeks and on your chin. Everything is fully connected, so you basically have a full beard, but just no mustache. Abraham Lincoln is a famous example of this beard without mustache. Another name for this type of beard is lion's mane.
This beard has a decent length, and the goatee is sometimes a bit longer, so the hair on the chin can be longer than on your cheeks. It is perhaps a style that fits older men a little bit better, but when you trim it nicely, as in the picture, then this beard without mustache looks pretty solid for younger men as well.
Chinstrap beard
A variation on the chin curtain, is the chinstrap beard. This bear without mustache is basically a thinner line that goes from your sideburns over your jawline to your chin. This beard style looks a bit like a chinstrap of a helmet, hence the name for this beard without mustache.
It is best to keep this look neat and well-trimmed. Also make sure the line does not get to wide or long. If you properly maintain it, then this beard is very stylish and is suitable for all ages. But you need to be willing to trim it often.
Shenandoah
The Shenandoah is also called the Amish beard. In some regards this is also just another variation of the chin curtain, but way longer. As well on your cheeks as on your chin this type of beard without mustache is longer. That can sometimes make this beard look a bit disheveled, but when you trim it well, as in the picture, it looks good.
This beard was especially popular in the 19th Century in the United States and Europe. Nowadays you see that many Amish men wear them still. That is a religious group of people originally from Germany. You also frequently see Muslim men and men from other religious branches wear this kind of beard without mustache.
Neck beard
With this next bear without mustache, we are staying in the 19th century. A neck beard means that you keep the hair on your throat. So, we do not mean the back of your neck necessarily in this case.
Nowadays it is a bit unique to just grow a beard below your jawline, but in the past that happened more often. Some examples of men that wore a neck beard without mustache in the past are Jefferson Davis and composer Wagner.
It is for sure not the most modern choice for a beard without mustache, so perhaps something slightly more for older generations. Modern and trendy beards are almost always without any neck beard at all. Everything below the jawline should be smooth.
Sideburns
Sometimes it can just be very simple. Growing out your sideburns is an easy way of having a little bit of a beard without having a full beard. You have little to no hair on your cheeks, no mustache and no goatee. When you want to get more into detail about sideburns, then I would recommend this blog post.
The Blues Brothers are perhaps one of the more know examples of men with larger sideburns. Also, Elvis regularly had longer sideburns. It is just a very simple, but elegant example of a bear without mustache.
Mutton chops
A longer version of sideburns is called a mutton chops beard. In this case your sideburns will transition in the beard on your cheeks. Sometimes men choose to grow out their beard even over the jawline. Then you have large pieces of hair on your cheeks, but no mustache and also no hair on your chin sometimes. There are many versions of the mutton chops that actually combine a mustache and have it connected with the sideburns.
The word mutton chops is referencing a piece of meat with a piece of bone sticking out. Mutton is the English word for sheep meat. The shape of this beard without mustache resembles the shape of a steak with a bone. The name and style suggest that this is a more classic beard style.
Conclusion
Although most men might choose a beard that includes a mustache, there are many options and reasons to choose for a beard without mustache. Some of these styles are more modern than others, but you definitely not always need a mustache to rock a beard. It really depends on your style, preference and age.
In many cases you will probably get some attention when choosing one of the mentioned beards without mustache, so be prepared that people will ask about it in conversations with new people. An interesting beard is an easy conversation topic.
Also, do not forget to take good care of your beard. Use at least a beard oil and often a beard balm as well. That helps to keep your beard without mustache hydrated and in the correct shape. No matter if you have a mustache or not, your beard will still need healthy products, depending on the length.
