Safety razor: a classic razor that is safe to use
When a barber shaves you, they will use a single edge barber razor or shavette. That is very old skool and it requires some trust. Potentially you would like to shave yourself in this old skool fashion as well, but figuring out the correct angle and hold can be tricky.
Do you still want to have that classic barber feeling when shaving in the morning? In that case I would recommend using a safety razor. These are manufactured so you can shave yourself in the morning without the risk.
A safety razor is not a new tool and has been around for a long time. It is really known as a classic razor. These razors are used for over a century by men that prefer wet-shaving over electric or disposable razors.
Wet-shaving with a safety razor
When talking about wet-shaving, I am talking about more than just shaving while you have some water on your face. You need to apply a shaving soap or shaving cream. You can do that with your hands or with a high-quality shaving brush.
The benefit of a shaving brush is that it helps to lift your beard hairs for an easier shave.
The Muhle Shaving Brush Silvertip Fibre is a very popular product in our Moquer shop and can be used for this purpose.

How do you use a classic safety razor?
One of the most important things is to replace the double edge razor blade in time when you feel it is losing its sharpness or when it starts to become rusty, which almost never happens anymore.
Depending on the type of safety razor, there are different ways to open it and replace the blade.
A twist safety razor
Some razors have a little wheel at the bottom that you can turn to open the safety razor easily. Grab the double edge razor blade on the shorter sides that are blunt.
It is very simple to put a new double edge razor blade in the safety razor. Some packages make it very easy to slide the razor blade in the safety razor, but if that is not the case, just hold it on the shorter and blunt sides and put them in your razor.
Then you can turn the wheel at the bottom of the handle again and you have replaced your razor blades.
The Muhle R41 Twist Safety Razor is a classic razor that has this kind of wheel to easily replace your blade. It is a classic razor with an open comb. The product is made of chromed steel to prevent oxidation. This razor is made in Germany and requires double edge razor blades of Muhle or any other brand. It is a perfect product for wet-shaving and way better for the environment than those disposable razors.
Muhle R41 Twist Safety Razor has an open comb and will not get clogged easily, so it is perfect for thick stubble. You can also shave very close to the skin with this razor for a smooth result. That is why this safety razor is primarily popular under experienced wet-shavers.

2 or 3 piece Safety Razor
If you have a safety razor that consists of 2 or more pieces, then the razor blade usually falls out when you disassemble your razor. So, keep your razor above the table to make sure your razor blade does not fall on your feet. The sink may seem convenient, but when your razor blade ends up in the drain, it is difficult to get it out in once piece.
Easiest is to disassemble your razor above a towel, so that the razor blade ends up on that. The Muhle shaving towels can be great for that purpose as well.
If the razor blade does not fall out on its own, it is usually connected to the head of the razor. In that case you take off the top and gently press the blade out of the head.
After that you put your new double edge razor blade in the head and you reassemble your razor. The razor blades usually contain holes to secure it in your safety razor. After that you tighten or connect the handle again.
Make sure you place the razor blade with the correct side up, so you can experience the blade in the best way possible.
A 2-piece safety razor works similar, but in that case you do not have to disassemble the center piece. Usually it will have a longer screw in the middle of the head of your safety razor.
The Muhle R89 Grande Safety Razor is a 3-piece safety razor. It is a classic razor with a closed comb. The product is made of chromed steel to prevent oxidation.
Muhle R89 Grande Safety Razor has a closed comb and that makes it more forgiving when using it (compared to many open comb razors). Yet, you can still shave relatively close to the skin for a comfortable shaving result. That is why this razor is popular under men that just started out with wet-shaving.

Hygienic storage
You want to store your safety razor in a hygienic way to prevent bacteria and fungi. These bacteria or fungi can cause acne or other impurities when you use a unhygienic safety razor.
First of all it is important to rinse your razor well after you shaved your beard. This prevents that hairs will clog your razor.
Do you just keep your safety razor on the little bathroom shelf? Then your razor is constantly touching a (dirty) surface.
It is better to keep your safety razor in a special stand to make sure it does not come in contact with anything.. That will definitely improve the hygienics of your razor.
The Muhle Safety Razor Stand is a beautiful and chromed holder for your classic safety razor. That way you can safely store your razor in style. Not every safety razor will fit in every stand, because every safety razor has its own dimensions.
This beautiful Muhle Safety Razor Stand can be used for the Muhle R106, R108, R41 and R89 safety razors. The Grande and Twist versions of the R41 and R89 will unfortunately not fit.
