Wavy hair men's haircuts and styling
Generally speaking, there are three different hair types or hair textures: straight, wavy, and curly hair. When you have straight hair, you will have the most hairstyle options, because that hair type is easier to work with. Curly hair is a bit more difficult, especially when you want to go against the natural texture of your hair. Wavy hair is in between these two categories and this blog post is about modern hairstyles for men with wavy hair.
When you have wavy hair, it means that your hair starts to curl a little bit when it is getting longer, but it does not actually curl. You perhaps have slightly less haircut options that your hair can pull off compared to men with straight hair, but there are plenty of great hairstyles to choose from if you have wavy hair.
I will talk about some wavy hairstyle options based off length: short, medium, and long wavy hair.
Short wavy men’s hair
Let us start easy and look at men’s wavy hairstyles for short hair. A short hairstyle is easier to maintain and style. Wavy hair works very well for shorter hairstyles.
Short hairstyles usually need a decent amount of texture to make them look good. Luckily, wavy hair has some texture by default, so that is very convenient. You do not want your hair to lay flat on your head. There are a lot of variations possible for shorter men’s wavy hairstyles.
One of the options is to keep the side and back shorter (a so-called undercut) or go for a fade (then your hair starts very short at your ears and gets longer when getting closer to the hair on the top of your head). Undercuts are extremely popular in general, so also for men with wavy hair. You just keep the hair on top a bit longer and use clippers for the side and back of your head.
Another choice you can make with short wavy hairstyles with texture is to let the hair fall in front of your face a little bit. Examples of that kind of haircut are textured fringe hairstyles, Caesar cuts or French Crops. The Faux hawk is also a fitting example of a shorter hairstyle with more texture that works well for men with wavy hair.
Best men’s products for short wavy hair
Short wavy hair with texture usually looks best when you use hair styling products without too much shine. That will make your hairstyle look natural. The best type of products to style your short wavy hairstyle is a matte clay, wax or paste with a medium to high hold.
Volume powders are also interesting products to consider when you have short wavy hair and are considering getting yourself a Faux Hawk, Textured Fringe, French Crop or Caesar look. Powders provide a lot of volume and texture with a matte finish. It accentuates exactly what these shorter wavy hairstyles already offer by themselves: a matte finish and texture.
Medium length men’s wavy hair
When you want to grow out your wavy hair a little bit and go for a medium length hairstyle, then there are other options to look at. Wavy hair works very well for medium length hairstyles if you are ready to embrace your natural waves.
A familiar haircut for men with medium long wavy hair is the Bro Flow. It is kind of a slick-back kind of hairstyles. Your hair is styled to the back. Your wavy hair is styled behind your ears, so you can clearly so someone ears when you look straight at them.
A Bro Flow hairstyle could be called a variant on the middle part hairstyle. Another one would be the curtain flows and in this last case you do let your hair drop in front of your face and/or over your ears.
A middle part works perfectly for men with wavy hair because this haircut requires texture. You can choose for yourself how you want to style this kind of look. You can keep the hair behind your years, over your ears or (partly) over your face. You must make sure that your wavy hair has a decent length to pull this off.
Another options for men with medium length wavy hair is a messy hairstyle. A tousled or loose hairstyle works very well with wavy hair, and it is quite easy to maintain and style. You just let your wavy hair go its natural way and use some product to keep it in check or add some definition. A messy hairstyle can also survive a bit of wind, so you can easily restyle it again with your hands.
Best products for medium length wavy hair
When your wavy hair is getting longer, then it is time to pay attention to your hair styling products a little bit more. Very dry and matte finish products will become more difficult to distribute in your wavy hair and it can actually pull your hair.
That is why I would recommend using medium hold hair styling products with a semi-matte finish or up to a medium shine. Examples of that are certain hair pastes, waxes, and creams. A pre-styling spray is also not a bad idea to achieve has much volume as possible in your messy wavy hair with a medium length.
A pomade could be an option when you go for a groomed look or a slightly slicker hairstyle. It would definitely work for the Bro Flow hairstyle because pomades are a bit stickier, so perfect for slicked back looks. They also offer some more shine.
Long wavy men’s hair
When you have a bit more patience or when you are very determined, then you can grow your wavy hair out and go for a long hairstyle. Long wavy hair is significantly longer than a medium length hairstyle. A good indication would be saying that your order is touching your shoulders. It can take a while before your way hair reaches this length and the phases in between are not always good looking, and your hair can become a bit unruly. That is called the awkward phase.
When you finally got your wavy hair long enough, then you have some options to consider. You can grow your hair out starting from a middle part hairstyle or you just let your hair grow wild. The longer your hair gets, the wavier it usually gets.
Gravity will pull your waves a bit to the ends of your longer wavy hair. That is also why it is advisable to let your hair fall on your shoulders. It could also be interesting to dye your hair. Blonde hair or highlights can add some other dimension to your longer wavy hair.
Best products for long wavy hair
When you have long wavy hair then I would primarily have a look at hair creams and sprays. Long hair usually needs to get blow dried to get it dry and you want to protect your long wavy hair against the heat of a blow dryer. You can use a heat protectant spray for that. When your hair really feels dry, you could look into hair oils. Argan oil is a super hydrating ingredient.
Besides styling long wavy hair you also must consider properly maintaining it. Always use a premium conditioner when you have washed your long wavy hair with a shampoo. Wavy hair inclines to become frizzy faster than straight hair. Especially when it becomes longer.
Conclusion
Even though that straight hair is probably the easiest hair type to deal with, is wavy hair also great to work with. In this blog post you have seen how many great men’s hair styling choices you have when you have wavy hair. The natural texture that wavy hair provides is just impressive. That is why messy and tousled hairstyles with additional volume work amazingly for men with wavy hair.
If you do not have wavy hair but are interested in creating some more waves, then you could try to go for a light perm. That way you can curl your hair just a tiny bit to create some natural looking waves in your hair. When you want to go for a different kind of haircut, than you can try something like that.
Wavy hair can manage most hair styling products but be careful with very dry or matte styling products. Those are more difficult to distribute evenly in your hair and can even pull your hair. That is not a pleasant feeling, so take that into consideration when styling your wavy hair.
