Pomade for men

Pomades are fairly wet and sometimes slightly sticky products and can be used in fine, normal, or thick hair. For fine hair, it is best to go for a pomade with not too much shine, as otherwise your scalp may become more visible. Pomade is suitable for men with any hair type and is especially useful for getting curly hair under control and for slicked hairstyles.

Properties of hair pomade

The properties of pomades depend slightly on the type of pomade. A water-based pomade has different properties than an oil-based pomade. For an in-depth analysis, we recommend reading our blog post about pomades!

But in general, pomades are used for classic men's hairstyles from the 1920s to the 1960s. Think of sleek and slicked styles with lots of shine. Perhaps you’ve seen an episode of Boardwalk Empire or Peaky Blinders, and then you know what we mean.

In terms of hold, you can usually expect a medium to high hold from pomades. The finish is often quite shiny and gives a sort of wet look. That is why certain hairstyles can appear a bit greasy.

Which men's hairstyles work best with hair pomade?

In contrast to, for example, a hair wax or hair clay, a pomade is perfectly suited for slicked hairstyles. Pomades are not intended for messy and textured styles. Therefore, it is best to go for classic hairstyles, such as slick-backs, side-parts, and pompadours, for example. Nicely groomed and shiny looks that you style with a comb or hairbrush.
