What is a shavette?

A shavette razor is a classic razor that you can fold open. It is a straight razor with replaceable blades. This is the key difference compared to a regular straight razor, which is a folding razor without separate razor blades.

Shavette Razor

The term “shavette” was coined by the German brand Dovo. In the past, it was known as a “replaceable blade straight razor,” but nowadays, the term shavette is widely recognised when referring to an open razor with detachable blades.

Shavette Advantages

The great thing about a shavette razor is that you can choose the type of blade you want to use, and you never have to sharpen your razor. A shavette uses single-edge razor blades, but you can also snap a double-edge razor blade in half to use.

A shavette is an excellent razor for home use but also very practical for barbers. You can replace the razor blade for each client, ensuring hygienic shaving while tailoring the shave to the customer’s needs. Not everyone has the same skin, so different razor blades may be required.

The single-edge or halved double-edge razor blades used in shavettes are also very affordable. In many cases, they cost less than 50 pence per razor blade, and one razor blade can last for at least 10 shaves.

How to Shave with a Shavette

Open your shavette and remove the cover. Then, insert a single-edge razor blade into the holder or a snapped-in-half double-edge razor blade. Use a good shaving soap or cream to create a nice lather, ideally whipped up with a quality shaving brush.

Hold the shavette in your hand and shave with short strokes at an angle of about thirty degrees. You can use your other hand to pull the skin taut, making it easier to shave the hairs.

In general, it is easiest to shave with the direction of hair growth when using a shavette. This reduces the chances of skin irritation and redness. Rinse your skin with cold water afterwards and pat it dry. Apply a good aftershave to soothe and hydrate your skin.

The Best Shavette
