Pre Shave

With a classic razor, you shave close to your skin and achieve a much smoother result compared to electric shaving. Because you shave closer to your skin, it is a bit more of a strain on your skin, so good skincare is important – and that is where pre shave products come in.

Pre shave products are an extra step in your grooming routine to prepare your skin for a traditional wet shave before applying a shaving soap or shaving cream. They also help soften coarse and thick beard hairs. That is why a pre shave step is particularly suitable for men with sensitive skin and/or men with thick and coarse beards.

What types of pre shave products are there?

There are several types of pre shave products you can use in your traditional wet shaving routine. For example, you have pre shave oil and pre shave cream. A smaller category is pre shave tonic.

Pre Shave Cream

A pre shave cream softens your beard hairs and forms a protective layer for your skin. Softer beard hairs are easier to shave off. Especially if you have thick facial hair or heavy beard growth, a pre shave cream can be a useful product to use.

One of the best-known brands is the Italian Proraso. The Proraso pre shave creams are very popular. Proraso pre shave cream is available in four different versions, depending on your skin type, so there is always a suitable Proraso Pre Shave option for you.

Pre Shave Oil

Another well-known category of pre shave products is pre shave oil. Pre shave oil provides plenty of hydration and protection for your skin. It also helps regulate sebum production, so your pores don’t become clogged.

In the Moquer shop, we offer Razor MD Pre Shave Oil and Taylor of Old Bond Street Pre Shave Oil. Both brands know how to create great products for classic shaving, so you can shave comfortably with a smooth result.

Pre Shave Tonic

A pre shave tonic works slightly differently. You spray a pre shave tonic into a damp shaving towel. Use warm water to wet your towel if you are going for a classic hot towel shave and apply it to your face before shaving. You will often see this in barbershops too.

After shaving, use cold water to close your pores again. In both cases, you spray some pre shave tonic into the towel. Baxter of California Shave Tonic is a great product for this.

How to use pre shave products?

Dampen your face slightly and then apply your pre shave cream or pre shave oil to your skin. Gently massage it into your skin and do not rinse it off.

After applying your pre shave, it is time to apply your shaving soap, shaving cream or shaving foam as usual. So a pre shave product is the first step in your shaving routine.
